Rhizarthrosis: Osteoarthritis of the base of the thumb

RHIZARTHROSIS: OSTEOARTHRITIS OF THE BASE OF THE THUMB

Rhizarthrosis is a degenerative joint disease at the base of the thumb.

It affects the joint located between the trapezium bone and the 1st metacarpal, more rarely between the scaphoid and trapezium.

Osteoarthritis is a wearing of the joint due to aging and to the destruction of the articular cartilage. This degeneration can also be the result of a previous articular fracture.

At first, it causes pain and loss of lor strength.
